Meet Our Lead Pastor

Dr. John Wayne McMann

Lead Pastor

John Wayne has served as Lead Pastor at First Methodist Conroe since 2022. Before coming to FMC, he served as lead pastor of Vine Worship at Kingwood UMC for six years and Core Worship at Marvin UMC for two years. He is a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary (MDiv, 2016) and United Theological Seminary (DMin, 2022).

John Wayne is married to Lauren, and they have three children, Luke, Rylie, and James. In his free time, he enjoys reading, running, golf, and spending time with his family. Having experienced his own awakening to life in Christ through the local church, his passion is helping others discover that same life in Jesus.

Then and Now

Our History

Serving Conroe Since 1870

For more than 150 years, First Methodist Conroe has been part of the Conroe community. Through changing buildings, growing ministries, and new seasons of ministry, our mission has remained centered on following Jesus and helping others discover life in Him.

1870

A Church Takes Root

First Methodist Conroe was organized in 1870. With no designated meeting place, the congregation first gathered in homes and later in a one-room school at Sherman and Third Street. The young church included just 12 to 15 members.

1880

The First Church Building

On December 19, 1880, thirty-three men pledged $418.50 toward the congregation's first church building. Isaac Conroe donated land at the corner of Davis and First streets for the new church.

1917

A Growing Congregation

As Conroe grew, so did the church. A second sanctuary at Main and Phillips was completed in 1917 for $11,208.14. Even after the challenges of the Spanish influenza epidemic, membership grew to approximately 400, with 250 people enrolled in Sunday School.

1941

Building for the Future

The cornerstone for a third sanctuary was laid in July 1941, and the building was completed that December. As ministries expanded, Sunday School classes and other gatherings spread into additional spaces throughout the surrounding area.

2000

A New Home for Ministry

The current First Methodist Conroe facility was dedicated in November 2000, opening a new chapter of ministry and providing expanded opportunities for worship, discipleship, children, youth, and community outreach.

2023

A New Chapter

Following a congregational vote in 2022, First Methodist Conroe became a member congregation of The Global Methodist Church on January 1, 2023.

Today, FMC continues the work that began more than 150 years ago, making disciples and inviting people to experience Life. Better. Together. in Jesus Christ.
